National Wine Day is marked annually on May 25 to celebrate the age-old beverage that not only makes you feel good but also comes with several health benefits.

The day is marked to create awareness about the fermented drink. Consumption of wine in moderation can lower the risk of heart disease, heart strokes, type 2 diabetes, cataracts, colon cancer, and also slow down brain decline.

The United States is the fourth-largest wine-producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France. California produces 89 percent of all wine in the U.S.

To celebrate this day, fetch a bottle of your favorite wine and invite your friends over, or better yet, curl up on the couch with a glass in hand.

Here are some facts about vino:

  • The oldest winery that we know of is Armenian, dated to 4100 BCE
  • There are three major types of wine: red, white and rosé
  • The colour of a wine is determined by the contact that the grape juice has with grape skins
  • Sweet or ‘dessert’ wine is made from grapes with high sugar content
  • The yeast used for fermentation is called saccharomyces cerevisiae, or ‘brewer’s yeast’
  • A ‘vintage’ wine is one made only with grapes harvested in the same year
