  • Oliver Dowden previously asked the company to add a disclaimer to the show

Streaming giant Netflix has made it clear that it has no plans of putting a disclaimer to its blockbuster series “The Crown.”

The decision comes after the culture secretary of the United Kingdom, Oliver Dowden, demanded the streaming service to label the series as a work of fiction. In its response, Netflix categorically said that it has “always presented” the show as a drama, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The streaming platform also noted that the subscribers know that it is indeed a “work of fiction” based on events that took place in the past. Hence, there is no need for a disclaimer.

“We have always presented ‘The Crown' as a drama - and we have every confidence our members understand it's a work of fiction that's broadly based on historical events. As a result, we have no plans - and see no need - to add a disclaimer,” THR quoted a Netflix spokesperson, as saying.

The response comes almost two weeks after Dowden said that putting up a disclaimer is necessary, so that people would know that some of the events shown in the series should not be taken as facts. He also noted that it is important for Netflix to caution the viewers, so that the current generation does not take everything seriously.

“It is a beautifully produced work of fiction, so as with other TV productions, Netflix should be very clear at the beginning it is just that. Without this, I fear a generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact,” Dowden said in an interview with Daily Mail.

It has been widely reported that certain scenes from the show’s fourth season have allegedly miffed the royal family. People close to the family have criticized the makers of the series for showing such events that could damage the integrity of the royal family and its members.

Despite all the controversy, the viewers are praising the latest season of the show and it is currently the highest-rated season on Rotten Tomatoes. Emma Corrin, who plays the role of Princess Diana, and Gillian Anderson, who portrays Margaret Thatcher, are being praised for their impeccable acting. Both stars are considered to be frontrunners for next year’s Primetime Emmys.

“The Crown” Season 4 is currently streaming on Netflix.

The Crown Charles and Diana
13. "The Crown" Season 4 (Netflix) - Probably the most scandalous show on TV right now, “The Crown” beautifully articulates some of the most jaw-dropping moments of Britain’s royal family. The latest season starts with Queen Elizabeth (played by Olivia Colman) welcoming the nation’s first woman Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher (played by Gillian Anderson). It also introduces the character of Princess Diana (Emma Corrin). Anderson’s menacing performance as Thatcher and Corrin’s embodiment of Diana is truly a treat for the eyes.  Des Willie/Netflix
