‘Gypsy’
Will viewers learn more about Jean Holloway’s (Naomi Watts) journey in “Gypsy” Season 2? Netflix

Netflix’s new thriller drama “Gypsy,” which stars Naomi Watts, is having trouble impressing viewers and critics.

The series has received numerous negative reviews from viewers following its release last month, and, as News.co.au suggests, these comments could result in Netflix canceling “Gypsy” after only one season. Even though the popular streaming site has not yet announced its plans to potentially renew the show, some original series on Netflix were renewed after one season due to their strong viewership. “Stranger Things,” for example, has been picked up for Season 2, while “Orange Is the New Black” is now gearing up for Seasons 6 and 7.

But unlike these two shows, some Netflix originals have also been canceled recently. This includes “Girlboss” and “Sense8.” Even though fans of the latter have urged Netflix to pick up “Sense8” for another season, the streaming site just couldn’t give them want they want. But fans of the series will be treated with a two-hour finale special in 2018.

While speaking with CNBC in May, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings explained their decision to axe some shows. “Our hit ratio is way too high right now. So, we’ve canceled very few shows… I’m always pushing the content team: We have to take more risks; you have to try more crazy things. Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall,” he said.

According to Vulture, this does not mean that Hastings’ goal is to purposely release shows that are unsuccessful and then cancel them. Rather, releasing shows that are unsuccessful gives him an idea of what viewers love. “You get some winners that are just unbelievable winners, like ‘13 Reasons Why.’ It surprised us. It’s a great show, but we didn’t realize just how it would catch on,” he said.

As of publication, Netflix has not announced the fate of “Gypsy” yet. The series followed the life of a therapist named Jean Holloway, who develops close relationships with the people her patients mention during their therapy sessions. In the end, it becomes more evident that Jean also has some issues and needs professional help.

“Gypsy” started streaming on Netflix on June 30.
