Netflix’s "Squid Game" has become the top-watched television show in the world in just one month with 111 million views since it first launched.

“Squid Game has officially reached 111 million fans — making it our biggest series launch ever!” Netflix said in a Tweet on Tuesday.

The nine-episode series was released on Sept. 17 and quickly gained immense popularity. The South Korean survival drama has gained critical acclaim and has attracted an international audience.

Taking a page out of "The Hunger Games" and "Lord of the Flies," "Squid Game" centers around 456 contestants who can win a large cash prize if they successfully complete a series of children’s games. The catch is, if they lose, they die.

"Squid Game" is the first Netflix show to hit over 100 million viewers in one month. The second most-watched series, “Bridgerton,” had 82 million viewers.

Netflix's success with "Squid Game" can be considered the streaming service's efforts to broaden its global reach.

"Squid Game" has also gained immense hype from social media. Users have sampled parts of the series in different memes and have made references to one of the popular games in which contestants had to “poke” a shape out of a honeycomb-like mixture.
