  • Australian YouTuber Wood Hawker a.k.a. "BeatEmUps" was unceremoniously dropped from the Nintendo Brand Ambassador Program
  • Nintendo didn't give a definitive reason for this action
  • Some are speculating that Hawker was dropped because of his long hair and tattoos
  • Others speculate that the reason is that Hawker posted a mod of "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild"

After being unceremoniously dropped from the Nintendo Brand Ambassador Program in late May, YouTuber Wood Hawker is searching for answers.

Hawker’s BeatEmUps YouTube channel almost exclusively features Nintendo titles. The Australian has reviewed games for the Nintendo Switch and it left him confused after receiving an email to remove all branding relating to the remote console.

Following a lifetime of support and admiration of Nintendo products, Hawker has spent the last five years as an ambassador of the brand, something which he was clearly proud of.

“If I were to tell little tiny kid me that one day not only would I be a successful YouTuber making content about all these games you grew up with and more but that Nintendo themselves would want to send me their games to talk about, I think my little kid heart would explode with excitement. So, to lose that is pretty upsetting,” Hawker said according to The Gamer.

A "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" mod previously posted could have been the cause because of Nintendo’s propensity for filing copyright claims against modded content. Yet Hawker adds in The Gamer that Nintendo would have reached out to him based on their relationship if they had a problem with his content.

In his latest video addressing the issue, Hawker also points out that at least two other people were dropped from the program with him and that his mod video was just a coincidence.

Sadly, with no definitive response from Nintendo, Hawker posted a Tweet stating speculation that he was dropped because of the way he looks.

Though Hawker says he has looked the same for years before Nintendo got him, he has received support as well as criticism for his long hair and tattoos which has resonated with some fans while turning off others.

At the conclusion of his latest video though, Hawker admits that it feels weird that he suddenly feels independent on his channel, even though he already was.

“There’s almost this feeling of like, there’s no one watching over it now, waiting for that mistake or waiting for something to go wrong. I guess now it’s just me battling YouTube like every other creator,” he said.
