Nissan's North American vehicle sales rose 4.4 percent in May on an adjusted basis compared to the same month a year ago, the company said on Tuesday.

The Japanese car maker said demand for more fuel efficient vehicles boosted sales during the past month. Sales of cars and small to mid-size crossovers grew by more than 17 percent.

Trucks and cars belonging to Nissan's luxury Infinity line fell 13.5 percent and 6 percent respectively on an adjusted basis.

American Depositary Shares of Nissan Motor Co. Ltd fell 12 cents, or 0.68 percent to $17.59.
