A poll released Thursday revealed that only 8% of American adults feel crypto is the best long-term investment. Real estate, followed stocks and gold, beat out digital currency.

Gallup surveyed 1,019 adults from April 1-19. This year, Gallup added cryptocurrency to the list of six options for respondents.

Crypto sat just under savings accounts-CDs (10%) as the best investments overall, according to respondents.

Real estate (45%) was way ahead of the six options. Stocks-mutual funds were the second-best option among respondents (18%), followed by gold (15%). Cryptocurrency sat above just one of the six options, bonds. Only 3% of respondents said bonds were the best investment.

However, Gallup included crypto as an option for only half of the respondents, which changed the results of some options. For example, without a cryptocurrency option, 24% of respondents listed stocks-mutual funds as the best investment. When crypto was on the list, that percentage dropped by six points to 18%.

Still, stocks were the only option that presented a significant change. Savings accounts and CDs actually rose from 9% to 10% with cryptocurrency on the list. Bonds dropped from 4% to 3%. When crypto was an option, real estate and gold did not change.

The results also changed when broken down by age. Notably, among those aged 50 and over only 2% thought crypto was the best investment option, below bonds (4%). Among this age range, 37% answered real estate and 23% said stocks-mutual funds. Gold (21%) and savings accounts-CDs (10%) followed.

Respondents between the ages of 18-49 flipped some results around. A higher percentage of this age range answered that real estate was the best investment (53%). Notably, cryptocurrency appeared second on the list with 13% of younger respondents answering cryptocurrency as the best investment. Stocks-mutual funds tied with crypto as the best investment in this age range.

Bonds were the least popular amongst younger respondents, with 2% saying that bonds were the best investment. Savings accounts-CDs (9%) and gold (9%) tied for third among the younger respondents.

"Americans overall don't see it [crypto] as one of the top investment options yet, but that could change in the future because many younger adults already consider it a viable investment choice," Gallup wrote. "Americans continue to perceive real estate as the best investment."
