“Outlander” Season 2 ended with Claire determined to go back to Jamie, but in Season 3, viewers will get to catch up on what she has been going through in the 20th century. To the surprise of pretty much no one, she and Frank will struggle to put their marriage back together.

Actress Caitriona Balfe told TV Insider that Claire’s efforts are futile. After all, no one can live up to the standards set by Jamie (Sam Heughan), especially not Frank (Tobias Menzies). “At this point in Claire’s life, Jamie’s dead. She’s trying to build a life after him, but once you’ve experienced a love so all-consuming, nothing can live up to it,” Balfe revealed.

TV Insider’s photos from Season 3 reveal Claire pushing a baby carriage and a fight with Frank. The historian is grabbing Claire’s wrist, but it certainly doesn’t look like an affectionate touch. Fans will have to tune into the Starz drama to see what they’re arguing about.

Claire won’t be leaving Frank, though. She agreed to raise her daughter with him, and she keeps her promise. However, she decides to concentrate on less romantic endeavors. “Claire decides to focus on her career and tries to slot Frank in. That leads to disappointment and resentment. It’s a broken marriage,” Balfe noted.

The nurse will be pursuing a medical degree. She wants to be a doctor, but programs at that time were mostly filled with white men. She’ll befriend Joe Abernathy (Wil Johnson), a black student in her class.

As previously reported, “Outlander” Season 3 will explore Frank’s character more than Diana Gabaldon’s novel “Voyager” did. The author has, however, approved of the changes. “They’ve expanded that end of the story a little bit, but they’ve done it well, very consistently,” Gabaldon told TV Guide in November.

“Outlander” fans won’t have to deal with Frank for too long, though. Balfe and Heughan have been spotted filming set in the 18th century scenes in Scotland, but Outlander TV News reports that Heughan told fans at Dunure Harbor that they were about to wrap filming for the Scotland portion of the season. They’ll soon move to South Africa to film scenes that are set in Jamaica.

“Outlander” Season 3 still doesn’t have a premiere date.
