“Outlander” star Sam Heughan is trading Jamie Fraser’s kilt for something a little more futuristic. He’ll star in next year’s “Bloodshot,” an action movie that will show him throwing down with Vin Diesel. He said it was a nice change of pace.

“It was great to do something completely different from ‘Outlander’ with ‘Bloodshot.’ It was really fun to stretch those muscles,” he told the Scotsman.

Though they play adversaries, it seems like Heughan enjoyed working with the “Fast and Furious” star behind-the-scenes. “Vin Diesel is an amazing man—he has built several movie franchises and is an incredible human being,” he said.

"To be part that ensemble was fun and to beat him up was also a great honor,” the Scottish actor added.

“Bloodshot” follows Vin Diesel’s Ray Garrison (AKA Bloodshot), a marine who was murdered—and then brought back to life to be a super soldier. Scientists revive him, erase his memory and use technology to enhance him, making him superhuman. Heughan plays a Navy SEAL who has been through a similar experience. Vin Diesel’s character remembers his life and wants revenge on the guy that killed him and his family, and Heughan’s character will somehow end up facing off with him.

February will be a big month for Heughan. “Bloodshot” comes out on Feb. 21, and that’s the same week “Outlander” Season 5 premieres. The historical drama returns to Starz on Feb. 16. He is also set to launch his Scottish whisky, Sassenach Spirits, and his show “Clan Lands” in 2020.

“Bloodshot” is directed by David Wilson and written by Eric Heisserer and Jeff Wadlow. The film also stars Eiza González, Toby Kebbell and Guy Pearce.

Sony’s Columbia Pictures is producing “Bloodshot.” Sony Pictures Television produces “Outlander.”
