A toddler girl in Ohio has been mauled to death by a pet dog at her residence after the canine got agitated during an altercation between two adults, police said.

The unidentified 16-month-old girl from Akron was attacked by one of the family's two pit bulls Sunday morning in the Firestone Park neighborhood.

The emergency officers who responded to the scene rushed the severely injured child to Akron Children’s Hospital where she later succumbed to injuries, Akron police spokesman Lt. Michael Miller said, reported Cleveland.com.

An initial investigation revealed there was some kind of an altercation at the child's home just before the girl got attacked by the dog.

The police later found out that the argument happened between a 20-year-old male and a female at the house, who are not the child’s parents. The dogs got agitated during the incident and one of the dogs mauled the toddler, the police said.

"Our deepest thoughts and condolences go out to the family and everyone impacted by this extremely tragic event," the Akron Police Department said in a statement, reported WKYC.

The girl's body was sent for an autopsy. The police said the investigation is ongoing and have not publicly identified the toddler.

After the incident, the pit bulls were removed from the home by the City animal control.

Last month, a woman in Oregon was mauled to death by a pit bull mix dog at her residence while her two children witnessed the attack. The dog brutally attacked the woman until a neighbor separated it from her after one of the children called for help. The dog reportedly had a history of violence and was eventually shot and killed by an officer who responded to the scene.
