A 4-year-old boy in South Africa was mauled to death by two pit bulls while he was playing with his friends.

The victim, identified as Milani Keke, went to the next door yard to retrieve his rugby ball when he was viciously attacked by the canines. The incident took place in Gugulethu, Cape Town, on Tuesday.

The boy's mother, Nothemba Keke, rushed outside when she heard her daughter screaming that her brother was attacked by dogs. She attempted to jump the fence to save the boy but her neighbor pulled her back.

Recalling the incident, Nothemba told local news outlet GHgossip, "I was here at home when I heard the screams of my daughter crying "Mama come out, Milani is being attacked by dogs." I ran outside and one was attacking him from the back of his skull while the other barked and ran around him. I ran and tried to jump the fence to save him, but a neighbor grabbed me and pulled me back."

"I don't like to talk about it. Even now I don't feel like talking; we are distraught and we are still shocked," she added.

"A death inquest case has been opened for investigation by Gugulethu police after a 4-year-old boy died at NY 50 after he was attacked by two dogs inside the yard while he was fetching a ball. The circumstances surrounding this incident are being investigated by the police, with no arrests so far," Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana told the outlet.

In a similar incident in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, a 13-year-old girl was killed by a pack of stray dogs as the locals looked on helplessly. The victim, identified as Neha Maurya, was returning from her family's agricultural field when she was viciously attacked by the ferocious canines. The victim suffered serious injuries and died on the spot. Officials told local media that the canines were hungry. The number of dogs involved in the fatal attack was not known.
