KEY POINTS

  • Sony and Microsoft haven't revealed their next-gen gaming consoles yet
  • Both consoles might be presented during this year's Tokyo Game Show in Japan
  • TGS2020 will present next-gen consoles as well as cloud gaming

Sony and Microsoft are both expected to release their next-gen consoles later this year. The new gaming machines – the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X – are said to feature powerful specs that will give players the most immersive console gaming experience yet. But despite leaks and teases, the two companies still haven't revealed them.

A press release from the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA), however, might be just what gamers need. According to the press release (via Twinfinite), this year's Tokyo Game Show will be where next-gen consoles will be shown.

TGS2020, per the CESA announcement, will be held Sept. 24 thru 27, at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, near Tokyo, Japan. The yearly convention will feature “novel game consoles for the next generation” and will have the theme, “The Future Touches Gaming First.”

“With the theme of this year, the event expects to provide an opportunity for people to touch and play the latest games and immerse themselves in the feel of an exciting future that is just around the corner,” CESA wrote.

“Featuring novel game consoles for the next generation, TGS2020 is sure to attract even more attention from around the world,” it added.

Face off

Sony and Microsoft might've already revealed their consoles before that time, but it's entirely possible that TGS 2020 will be the first event where both gaming machines will be shown side by side, Tom's Guide noted.

The PS5, maker, for its part, has already decided to skip this year's E3, GDC 2020, as well as PAX East. TGS will be the last major event where it will get the chance to face off against the Xbox maker before Holiday.

Other things

CESA also noted that TGS2020 will feature many other things, including new technologies related to gaming, such as cloud gaming and the use of 5G for gaming. It will also introduce “new frontiers” of games that will feature cross overs with education, fashion, arts and other industries.

This year's TGS will feature all of these things in their designated areas. These areas include:

  • Cloud gaming area
  • “Game X Fashion” area
  • General Exhibition Area
  • Smartphone Game Area
  • Game School Area
  • Indie Game Area
  • e-Sports Area
  • VR/AR Area
  • Merchandise Sales Area
  • Family Game Park
