  • Royal expert Elizabeth Holmes said there were a lot of red flags in Prince Charles and Princess Diana's marriage

Princess Diana and Prince Charles had a fairytale-like wedding, but their marriage was not romantic, a report has claimed.

The Prince and Princess of Wales weren't a match made in heaven. Royal expert Elizabeth Holmes, author of "HRH: So Many Thoughts on Royal Style," spoke with Us Weekly ahead of the premiere of CNN's new docuseries "Diana" where she discussed Prince Charles and Princess Diana's marriage. According to her, their union was "almost like a business transaction."

"Diana just checked so many boxes and sort of slotted right in, and was clearly very eager and willing and wanting to please," Holmes explained to the outlet.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana had a very brief time of getting to know each other as shown on Netflix's "The Crown." Also, at the time, Prince Charles was feeling the pressure to settle down because he was already 32 when he met her. Meanwhile, Princess Diana was only 19. According to Holmes, Princess Diana struggled with their 12-year age difference.

"She’s making this huge life decision without stable family behind her [and] much guidance," Holmes continued. "Looking back in hindsight, it’s very easy to find all the red flags. … It was like, 'We’re marching forth. We’re doing our duty.'"

Prince Charles and Princess Diana tied the knot in 1981. However, they separated in 1992 and announced their divorce four years later.

The late Princess of Wales died in a car crash in Paris in 1997. After seven years, Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles, the Duchess of Cornwall.

Many believed that Prince Charles has always loved Camilla even if he married Princess Diana. According to Sally Bedell Smith, author of "Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life," Prince Charles and Camilla didn't end up together before he met Princess Diana because her father Bruce Shand was not fond of the heir apparent. Also, Camilla was not fit to be the future king's wife because she was allegedly an "experienced" woman.

"It was absolutely vital to have on the throne somebody who was a virgin," Dr. Piers Brendon said in the documentary "The Royal House of Windsor." "A future Queen must have no past."

Marlene Koenig, an internationally recognized expert on British and European royalty and author of "Queen Victoria's Descendants," said Prince Charles was happier with Camilla.

"Camilla was not popular or well liked, [though] this has changed a lot since the marriage as Camilla has taken on a lot of patronages and Charles is a lot happier," she told Town & Country.
