KEY POINTS

  • Some Twitter users questioned the timing of the release of the first trailer for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's docuseries
  • Some claimed the Sussexes were trying to upstage the upcoming Earthshot Prize awards ceremony
  • Kate Middleton and Prince William arrived in Boston Wednesday for the Friday ceremony

The timing of the release of the first trailer for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's highly anticipated Netflix docuseries has raised some eyebrows and sparked speculation that they are trying to overshadow Prince William and Kate Middleton's U.S. trip.

Netflix dropped the first trailer for "Harry & Meghan" Thursday, a day after the Prince and Princess of Wales arrived in Boston, Massachusetts, and a day before the royal couple is set to attend Prince William's second annual Earthshot Prize awards ceremony at the MGM Music Hall.

Some royal pundits and fans questioned the timing of the first-look trailer's release, suggesting that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex may have been trying to steal Prince William and Princess Kate's thunder.

"Here it is, the day before Prince William and Catherine's big royal event in the USA Bitter Prince Harry and Meghan," Daily Mail editor Richard Eden tweeted.

"Dropping this first look while the other two are in Boston. The juiciness of it all, and I'm here for it," another Twitter user wrote.

"With Harry's brother and sister-in-law in the USA today and tomorrow... and Prince William's @EarthshotPrize in Boston on Friday night, some might reasonably ask: 'couldn't they have waited a couple of days?'" ITV News royal editor Chris Ship tweeted.

Royal correspondent and "Finding Freedom" co-author Omid Scobie seemingly sparked the rumors of competition between the two royal couples with a tweet.

"If tomorrow is Prince William's Super Bowl, then here's your Halftime Show," he wrote. "@Netflix have [sic] released a first look at the Sussexes' docuseries: Harry & Meghan. Out December 8, six episodes will share 'the other side' of their love story and the challenges they faced."

Others accused Prince Harry and Markle of trying to upstage the Earthshot Prize, an initiative founded by Prince William to help tackle some of the planet's most pressing environmental challenges.

"Thank you for providing proof that the Sussexes are deliberately trying to sabotage the Earthshot trip. How petty and small. I can't wait for the numerous lies that will be told in their mockumentary. I love fiction," one netizen commented on Scobie's tweet.

"[Meghan and Harry] do this to sabotage the Waleses' trip to Boston. Yet you promote it," another wrote in response to the royal biographer's post.

But other royal fans defended the Sussexes and fired back at the couple's critics.

"Netflix ALWAYS releases a trailer a week before the series is aired! ... William and Kate aren't the most important people in the world. The world doesn't stop for them!" one Twitter user wrote.

"Netflix always drops on the 1st, especially a show that starts in a week. Looks like they didn't plan well," another added.

"Harry and Meghan do not need to put their projects/work/events on hold for Will and Kate. And if the roles were reversed, they would do the same. Y'all swear Will and Kate are popular [and won't] get overshadowed by Harry and Meghan, so they should be fine," a third person wrote.

"Harry and Meghan have stepped down for a while now! They're not submitted to any royal calendar or approval! They're their own managers of their agenda!" another user pointed out.

After sitting courtside at a Boston Celtics and Miami Heat game on Wednesday night, the Prince and Princess of Wales visited Thursday Roca in Chelsea, a non-profit focused on high-risk young people between the ages of 16 and 24 at the center of urban violence, People reported.

While there's no official confirmation from Netflix yet, Prince Harry and Markle's docuseries "Harry & Meghan" is reportedly expected to premiere on the platform on Dec. 8.
