Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip made headlines during their first tour of Australia in 1954. Initially, the couple was supposed to head to the continent in 1952, but their trip was postponed due to the death of Her Majesty’s father.

In one of the royal couple’s photos in Australia, the Duke of Edinburgh lovingly stares at her husband. The dad of four also looks very proud of her.

According to journalist Marien Dreyer, the Queen looked like a fragile and fairy-like personality when she arrived in Australia. She was also breathtakingly lovely.

“She was in a gown of palest gold and brilliant embroidery and in sharp contrast, the beautiful blue sash of the Order of the Garter. The diamond tiara on the Queen’s beautifully poised head flashed fire, but around her throat, she had a positive waterfall of liquid flames, or so it seemed… the friendly crowd was almost all women, oohing and aahing with rapture at the sight of a Fairy Queen,” she wrote.

The publication also claimed that the Australians immediately came under the monarch’s spell because of her mere presence and captivating speech.

“I am convinced that Australia has a glorious future,” she said in her farewell speech, revealing that she was saddened to be leaving. This visit has been most interesting and enjoyable to me, but I also hope it has served to remind you of the wonderful heritage we share,” the Queen shortly.

After her first visit to Australia, the Queen and Prince Philip returned to the continent 15 more times. Prince Philip has also gone to Australia on his solo tours a handful of times.

At present, the Queen is no longer able to travel to different parts of the world. Her husband has also retired from his royal duties. As such, the Queen usually taps members of the royal family to visit certain parts of the world on her behalf.

For instance, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were asked to go to South Africa last month. Prince William and Kate Middleton are in Pakistan at the moment.
