Prince Philip played an important role at Princess Margaret’s wedding several years ago.

Princess Margaret tied the knot with Antony Armstrong-Jones, the 1st Earl of Snowdon at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 1960. At that time, the princess’ father, King George VI, has already been dead for 8 years. This means that Princess Margaret didn’t have a dad to walk her down the aisle.

Prince Philip stepped in an assumed this role since he was already married to Queen Elizabeth II at that time. The Duke of Edinburgh also happened to be the close adult man in Princess Margaret’s life since she didn’t have any male siblings.

Jess Sheldon, a journalist for Express, said that it has also been a tradition among Britons to choose children and young teenagers to take on this important duty, but Princess Margaret wanted Prince Philip to play an important role at her wedding. Princess Anne, who was 9 at that time, was amongst Princess Margaret’s bridal entourage.

In related news, Meghan Markle followed in Princess Margaret’s footsteps last year when she tied the knot with Prince Harry. The Duchess of Sussex was accompanied by Prince Charles at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle because her dad, Thomas Markle Sr., couldn’t make it.

Months later, Markle revealed in her handwritten letter to Thomas that he did not inform her beforehand that he couldn’t make it to her wedding day. Luckily, Prince Charles was on hand and more than happy to step into an important role.

After the wedding, Prince Harry revealed that his dad was more than happy to walk Markle down the aisle.

“I asked him to and I think he knew it was coming and he immediately said, ‘Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs and I’m here to support you.’ For him, that’s a fantastic opportunity to step up and be that support, and you know he’s our father so of course he’s gonna be there for us,” Prince Harry said in the documentary “Prince, Son, and Heir: Charles at 70.”
