Princess Diana struggled a lot during her marriage to Prince Charles. But the late royal reportedly didn’t want to divorce the heir to the throne.

However, Princess Diana was left with no other choice but to end her marriage after Queen Elizabeth stepped in and urged her and Prince Charles to call it quits. While the royal couple’s divorce was being finalized, the Princess of Wales phoned pop star, George Michael.

During their conversation, Princess Diana greeted her good friend on his birthday, and she also opened up about her failed marriage to Prince Charles. The mom of two called her divorce grim. She also seemingly threw shade at the royal family.

“Not a very loving, compassionate family, this one I’m leaving. I’m going to get three-quarters of what I want and the quarter he can’t have, soother you go,” she said.

At this point, Michael told Princess Diana that he would love to see her. The late royal responded by saying that she can’t wait until her divorce proceedings are over. But she also reassured her pal that she’s doing fine.

Michael’s phone conversation with Princess Diana was recorded through the pop star’s answering machine. Before the singer’s death in 2016, he gave the tape to his childhood friend, Andros Georgiou.

Princess Diana and Michael first met each other in 1989 after watching a concert, and they forged a close friendship since then. During their phone call, the late pop star told Princess Diana that he’s in love, and the royal told him that he’s lucky.

And while speaking with The Sun, Georgiou revealed that Princess Diana and Michael’s conversation took place two years before the royal couple separated.

“She told him their marriage had been an arranged one and that, as she’d been so young, she’d no real idea of what she was getting into. Although Camilla was never mentioned by name, she confided that Charles didn’t love her as he was ‘still in love with his ex,’” he said.
