Princess Diana was encouraged to give her controversial interview about Prince Charles by one member of the royal family.

In the Amazon Prime documentary “Diana: The Woman Inside,” Simone Simmons, Princess Diana’s friend, claimed that it was Sarah Ferguson that urged Princess Diana to give the interview.

During their conversation, Simmons asked the Princess of Wales who came up with the terrible idea of exposing Prince Charles’ affair and said that it was Ferguson and Ruby Wax. Ferguson also previously said that she felt interviewer Martin Bashir tricked Princess Diana into revealing details about her private life.

“I said, yeah the brains of Britain! Oh my God!” she said.

Royal editor Richard Kay said that desperate people certainly do desperate things. And Penny Junor, a royal author, said that Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom regretted giving the interview. However, before seeing it on television, she thought that she did a wonderful job.

“She was very pleased with what she’d done at the time, she thought it was a great performance and she was thrilled. She rang up her friends and said ‘you must watch,’” Junor said.

Simmons was one of the people that Princess Diana called and asked to watch her interview. The Princess of Wales asked her the next day what she thought of everything that she said on camera.

“I said, you made a real prat out of yourself. She was horrified,” Simmons said.

Princess Diana’s friend also remembered that the Princess of Wales was supposed to be asked about her charities and not her marriage.

“He duped her into it because he got her at a weak spot when she was a bit down,” Simmons said.

Following Princess Diana’s Panorama interview, her divorce from Prince Charles was finalized. A year later, the Princess of Wales died following a fatal car crash in Paris. At that time, she was with her then-boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed, who also died in the crash.
