Princess Diana encouraged Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle to show off their baby bumps with pride.

In Netflix’s 2013 documentary “ The Royals,” the late Princess of Wales was described as the trailblazer of royal pregnancies. Princess Diana changed how royals, like the Duchess of Cambridge and Duchess of Sussex, carry themselves in public when they have a bun in the oven.

“Diana was the first royal mother to wear her bump with pride,” the narrator said.

According to journalist Anne De Courcy, a royal pregnancy was usually kept under wraps for a long time before the second world war. In addition, the expectant royal would rarely go out and would just stay at home.

Ingrid Seward, editor of Majesty magazine, doesn’t recall a single picture of the Queen mother during her pregnancy. She added that there’s only a couple of photos showing Queen Elizabeth II when she was pregnant.

Seward said that a royal pregnancy was supposed to be a private time. People also thought back then that it was rude to photograph a member of the royal family when they were expecting a baby.

However, things were different with Princess Diana. She continued doing royal visits even if she was pregnant and even wore outfits that highlighted her growing baby bump.

Royal fashion historian James Sherwood said that Princess Diana was “probably the first royal mother that you saw.”

“She did continue to make state visits, she was visible,” he added.

There was also too much excitement when the public learned that the People’s Princess was pregnant. In fact, everything she did landed on the front page of newspapers.

Middleton and Markle followed Princess Diana’s footsteps. Both still attend royal engagements even if they are pregnant and have been photographed with their baby bumps. However, some royal fans have expressed their disdain for Markle’s gesture of cradling her tummy all the time.

Netizens attacked Markle for always cradling her baby bump. They urged the pregnant royal to stop doing it as her bump will not “fall off.” They felt that it was too much. Many found it annoying and even accused Markle of seeking too much attention.

According to an expert, Markle could be six months along with her pregnancy based on the volume of her hair. So, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will likely welcome their first born in March.
