Princess Diana was previously seen as a threat by the royal family. And while the Princess of Wales was still married to Prince Charles, she had the heartbreaking realization that she will never become the next Queen.

Since Prince Charles is the heir to the throne, and he will be king one day, Princess Diana was supposed to assume the counterpart of her husband’s royal title. But during her interview with Martin Bashir for Panorama in 1995, the late royal said that she never thought of becoming Queen.

“I’d like to be a Queen of people’s hearts – in people’s hearts – but I don’t see myself being Queen of this country. I don’t think many people will want me to be Queen… Actually, when I say people, I mean the establishment that I married into because they have decided that I’m a non-starter,” she said.

Princess Diana went on to say that the royal family had a hard time accepting her because it seemed as though she wasn’t following a rule book. When she was still alive, the Princess of Wales oftentimes ruled from the heart and not her mind.

Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom also accused the royal household of seeing her as a threat. Prince Charles and his family reportedly thought that Princess Diana was up to no good and believed that she was destructive.

“I think every strong woman in history has had to walk down a similar path, and I think it’s the strength that causes the confusion and the fear… Why is she strong? Where does she get it from? Where is she taking it? Where is she going to use it? Why does the public still support her? When I say public, you go and do an engagement and there are a great many people there,” she said.

Princess Diana was well-loved by the public. In fact, she was also dubbed as the People’s Princess.
