  • Princess Diana didn't have a happy childhood
  • She wanted her sons to have a different childhood from her
  • Earl Spencer wanted Princess Diana to be a boy

Princess Diana reportedly endured a very lonely childhood that she vowed to make sure that her sons wouldn’t experience the same thing.

According to OK! magazine, even though the Princess of Wales came from a relatively privileged background, the mom of two also encountered great unhappiness.

“Her birth was greeted with disappointment by her father who had longed for a boy and her parents divorced when she was only seven. It was a lonely childhood she vowed her own children would never endure,” the publication claimed.

But even though Earl Spencer wanted his eldest child to be a boy, he still maintained a close relationship with Princess Diana. In fact, the late royal was devastated when her parents divorced because she was forced to live with her mom, Frances Shand Kydd. Eventually, the court ruled for Spencer to have custody of his children so Princess Diana also got to spend ample time with him.

Princess Diana’s dad then married Raine, which she and her brother hilariously called “Acid Raine.” In 1978, Spencer fell into a coma after suffering from a stroke. According to Express, Raine prevented Princess Diana from seeing her dad because she felt that she was the only one who should take care of him.

Royal author Penny Junor said that Raine was quite territorial when it came to Spencer especially while he was fighting for his life. Luckily, Spencer got out of his coma and he was able to walk Princess Diana down the aisle when she married Prince Charles in 1981.

Meanwhile, Princess Diana experienced more hardships in the hands of Prince Charles. After their second son was born, the heir to the throne made a similar comment to Spencer. But instead of wanting Prince Harry to be a boy, he wanted his second child to be a girl. Prince Charles’ comment reportedly hurt Princess Diana to the core.
