Princess Diana’s former protection officer, Ken Wharfe, recently weighed in on why he thinks Meghan Markle’s royal staff has been resigning.

Most recently, it was reported that one of the Duchess of Sussex’s female bodyguards has submitted her resignation. The same protection officer will also be leaving the police force.

Wharfe wrote in a Daily Mail report that Prince Harry’s wife likes to interact with the public during her walkabouts, which means that the presence of a close protection officer could be difficult both for her and the royal aide.

“There is no doubt that protecting Meghan is a demanding role. I happen to know there are concerns about her dysfunctional family, for example,” Wharfe wrote.

He went on to say that there have been fears that members of Markle’s family will suddenly turn up at her public engagements with a television crew in tow.

Wharfe also noted the fact that Markle may find that having her bodyguards follow her around is quite constraining. The former protection officer of Princess Diana went on to say that Princess Diana did a wonderful job adjusting to the inconvenience of having him and other people hanging around when she was out in public.

“There were times when we were handy, parking the car for her so she could nip to the shops, for example, and providing money for those purchases because she never traveled with cash. That said, Diana was hardly the easiest boss,” he said.

Wharfe said that she was also like Markle who used to want to get close to as many people as possible during her outings. Wharfe and the Princess of Wales eventually found a middle ground that made their lives both much easier.

Whenever there were times that Princess Diana wanted to go out by herself, she agreed to page Wharfe or to call him for anything that she might need. However, Wharfe’s not-so-strict attitude also got him into trouble at times.

During their trip to the Bahamas, Wharfe didn’t tell the Scotland Yard where he and Princess Diana were going. But they were shocked when he presented them with an expensive bill afterward.
