“Prodigal Son” is coming to an end on Monday night, but is it gone for good? The Fox drama about the son of a serial killer investigating homicides hasn’t been canceled or renewed for Season 2 yet.

With coronavirus postponing everything, Fox won’t announce the “Prodigal Son” renewal or cancellation during May upfronts as usual, so that means fans don’t know when they’ll get an announcement. However, the ratings are a big clue.

“Prodigal Son” Season 1 has been averaging 3.37 million viewers overall each week, and 0.75 of them are in the coveted 18-49 demographic. That puts it firmly in the middle of Fox’s season ratings, according to TV Series Finale.

The freshman show is doing better than fellow newbie, “Almost Family,” which was already canceled. However, “9-1-1” and its “Lone Star” spinoff are bringing in almost twice as many viewers. The good news is that “Prodigal Son" has remained pretty steady. There’s always a drop off after a series premiere, but the drama held onto more than 75% of its audience throughout Season 1.

All of this information means that renewal is likely dependent on numbers that aren’t available, including On Demand, streaming and international sales. Fans will have to wait for Fox to make an official announcement to find out if “Prodigal Son” is canceled or renewed for Season 2.

Luckily, this is the first season finale that the series had always planned. Due to scheduling issues, the finale had to be filmed in February, and they were planning to go back and shoot episodes 19 and 20 in March. Those were interrupted by the pandemic shutdown.

“Very fortunately, by the end of February we had already shot the season finale of ‘Prodigal Son’ and were able to tell the story that we had pitched Fox in the room and the story that we had always wanted to tell with the show,” co-creator Sam Sklaver told Entertainment Weekly. “Our work for the rest of March was to shoot episodes 19 and 20 — a lot of the Nicholas Endicott.”

“Prodigal Son” airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on Fox.
