Queen Elizabeth II is known for traveling with her huge entourage, and she once brought 40 suitcases during her trip with Prince Philip to Malta.

In 1950, the Duke of Edinburgh was stationed in Malta prior to his wife’s coronation as Queen. Before Her Majesty was crowned in 1953, she enjoyed a three-month holiday with her husband.

Kitty Kelley, the author of the book “The Royals,” said that the Queen packed tons of her personal items so she ended up having 40 suitcases.

“Elizabeth rejoined him there in November for three months, again leaving her children with their nannies and grandparents. Accompanied by her maid, her footman, and her detective… She arrived on the island with her sports car, 40 wardrobe trunks, and a new polo pony for her husband,” Kelley wrote.

While in Malta, Her Majesty spent most of her days relaxing in the sun, shopping, lunching with the wives of the officers, and getting her hair done at a beauty salon. She also toured the military installations, cut ceremonial ribbons, and visited nursery schools.

At night, the Queen enjoyed dinner parties and dances, and she also watched movies. Her Majesty reportedly got to enjoy the freedom she couldn’t take advantage of while in London since she belongs to the prestigious royal family.

But despite all of the fun she had in Malta, the Queen doesn’t really enjoy traveling in general especially when she has to be on a plane for very long hours. In the book “Queen of the World,” author Robert Hardman said that the monarch is famously stoical about the dangers of royal life while on excursions.

“However, she has never been a great fan of air travel. If St. Christopher, the patron saint of travelers, can afford any extra protection then so much the better,” Hardman said.

The Queen has not traveled overseas in recent years due to her busy schedule and delicate age.
