Queen Elizabeth II reportedly got worried about Prince Philip over the retired royal’s health.

In the book “Harry: Life, Loss, and Love,” author Katie Nicholl claimed that Her Majesty passed on more roles to Prince William and Prince Harry due to her growing concerns about the Duke of Edinburgh’s health. As early as 1999, the Queen already considered scaling back her royal trips because it was already taking a toll on the then-88-year-old Prince.

“Philip has suffered a bad spell of health the year before and had spent a fortnight in the hospital in April 2008 with a serious chest infection. That same year, the Queen canceled a trip to the Middle East, the first time she had ever done so,” she wrote.

At that point, the monarch asked her grandsons to step up to the plate.

Years later, the Queen once again grew increasingly worried about Prince Philip. During the landmark 2012 Diamond Jubilee, Nicholl was told by a royal source that the Queen asked them to not overburden her.

“It wasn’t herself that she worried about, but the Duke. His busy schedule was starting to take its toll and the Queen didn’t want Philip doing too much long-haul travel and exhausting himself,” Nicholl wrote.

In the same year, Prince Philip was rushed to the hospital due to his bladder infection. He also had treatment for a blocked coronary artery. Being at the hospital meant that Prince Philip was unable to attend the Diamond Jubilee celebration.

At that time, the event reflected Prince Charles’ vision for a slimmed-down monarchy that revolved around the core senior royals. But had the Duke of Edinburgh been there, this wouldn’t have been allowed.

According to Nicholl, the idea of having a slimmed-down monarchy caused some ill-feelings to some members of the extended British family, including Prince Andrew. The dad of two was reportedly upset that he was not included at the event.
