Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s relationship is very different behind closed doors.

In the 2008 documentary titled “ The Duke: Portrait of Prince Philip,” Tim Heald revealed that the Duke of Edinburgh’s behavior toward Her Majesty changes depending if they are in a private or a public setting. Prince Philip lets Queen Elizabeth II lead when they are in public because she’s the Queen, but in contrary, he’s the boss in their household.

“He defers quite rightly because she is the Queen, she is the ultimate, she is the boss, and he is just her husband,” Heald wrote, noting that the minute the doors shut in their own private home, things change.

"He will feel perfectly able to say: ‘That was a bloody stupid remark you made about this’,” the royal biographer continued. Queen Elizabeth II accepts whatever Prince Philip says because she acknowledges that her husband wears the trousers at home.

In the 2014 documentary “The Majestic Life of Queen Elizabeth II,” Maltese journalist John Mizzi recalled how he caught the 97-year-old royal swearing at Her Majesty. He also agreed that in private, it’s Prince Philip who “ran the show.“

“He seemed to boss her around most of the time,” Mizzi said and added that he heard Prince Philip “swearing at her [Queen Elizabeth II].”

Hugo Vickers commented about this matter and said that the Queen actually appreciates that Prince Philip isn’t intimidated by her and can tell her off whatever is in his mind.

The Duke of Edinburgh is the only person who can straightforwardly tell the Queen if something is wrong and this makes them a perfect match.

Royal commentator Camilla Tominey agreed with Vickers. For her, having someone like Prince Philip was a “refreshing change for the Queen” as she is surrounded by a lot of men who often agree with her demands.

Prince Philip doesn’t mince his words. When he has an opinion, he will state it.

In related news, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip had an almost decade-long family feud due to their children’s name. The Duke of Edinburgh wanted to give his surname to their children, but the monarch declined. He never put down the issue to rest for years until the Queen had to consider it.
