Salinas, California-based Tanimura & Antle Inc. is voluntarily recalling select single heads of romaine lettuce distributed in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and several other states due to possible E.coli contamination.

On Friday, the company announced the recall on the Food and Drug Administration website.

“Out of an abundance of caution, Tanimura & Antle Inc. is voluntarily recalling its packaged single head romaine lettuce under the Tanimura & Antle brand, labeled with a packed on date of 10/15/2020 or 10/16/2020, due to possible contamination with E. Coli 0157:H7,” the announcement read.

“Packages contain a single head of romaine lettuce with the UPC number 0-27918-20314-9. No other products or pack dates are being recalled. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the recalled product.”

Tanimura & Antle revealed the decision to recall the romaine lettuce was based on a consultation with the FDA and a test result of a random sample collected by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The company suspects a total of 3,396 cartons of the product affected were also distributed in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Virginia, and more.

The potentially contaminated lettuce was shipped in cases of either 12, 15, 18, or 24 heads per case.

Symptoms of E. coli include stomach cramping, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Although Tanimura & Antle Inc. suspects the recalled bags of lettuce are no longer available for purchase due to its shelf life, the company is advising retailers or consumers who may be in possession of the romaine lettuce to dispose of the product.
