KEY POINTS

  • Samsung is said to be releasing the new Galaxy Z Flip on Feb. 14
  • This release date is a consistent claim among many different rumors
  • Samsung is set to announce the device via the Unpacked event on Feb. 11

It appears that consumers looking for an expensive gift to give to their special someone – or themselves – will have one in the form of a foldable smartphone known as the Galaxy Z Flip.

Samsung is tipped to release its new foldable smartphone in a clamshell design, the Galaxy Z Flip. Previous reports revealed that the handset, designed to go mano a mano with Motorola's new Razr reboot, will feature better specs compared to its rival but will be sold for a cheaper price.

Known leaker Max Weinbach, from XDA Developers, recently cemented previous leaks claiming that the device will be released on Feb. 14. Previous reports claimed Samsung will release the device on that day, but since those reports were based on rumors, fans could simply ignore them. Weinbach's recent report, however, seems to have some credibility to it for some reasons.

First, the date is consistent among many of the claims he heard

Weinbach, in his tweet, claimed that while some of his sources reported varying details about the device, one detail in particular remained consistent: the release date.

“I've heard so many weird stuff about the Galaxy Z Flip. Different prices, different carriers, but the one thing that stays the same is the date. February 14th,” Weinbach wrote.

Second, Samsung aired an ad for the device during an Oscars commercial

While this detail doesn't have anything to do with Weinbach's leak, it does have something to do with the device itself. The Verge noted that Samsung “has always gone big with ads at the Academy Awards.” The latest of these is a 28-second ad showing the device from all angles.

Third, that same ad points to an event this week

The ad showed a familiar date as it closed: Feb. 11, 2020. Samsung is scheduled to hold its Unpacked event during this day to formally announce and unveil a slew of devices including the three new handsets in the Galaxy S20 lineup, as well as the new Galaxy Z Flip. The foldable could very well be released after that.

All these details indicate that Weinbach's leaks and claims have weight to them. Still, it's best to wait for Samsung to officially announce a launch date since it hasn't yet. If it releases the device on that day, fans will have something extra nice to give to their special someones.
