  • Samsung is working on a new 5G variant of the Galaxy Z Flip
  • The company is also working on upgrading its processor to a Snapdragon 865
  • The device might come in a new brown color

A new report reveals that Samsung is planning on adding more than just support for 5G to its Galaxy Z Flip foldable smartphone.

Previous reports indicated that Samsung is planning on releasing a 5G variant of the Galaxy Z Flip clamshell in the near future. A new report from Phone Arena indicates that the South Korean giant is planning on doing more than just prepare the foldable for 5G connectivity – it is also working on giving it more processing power.

According to the report, a “freshly discovered pre-release benchmark” indicates that Samsung is upgrading the Galaxy Z Flip to feature a processor that's more powerful than the Snapdragon 855+ it currently uses. The benchmark reveals that the device could actually have a Snapdragon 865 processor.

The benchmark results revealed that Samsung tested a handset with the device number SM-F707B. The said device has a Qualcomm-branded chipset codenamed “kona.” The processor has eight cores, and has a base frequency of 1.80GHz. The test revealed that the processor netted a 966 single-core score, and a 3,183 multi-core core.

The use of the Snapdragon 865 on the Galaxy Z Flip quickly changes things. Not only will the device continue to have its unique form factor, it will also have support for 5G connectivity on top of processing power that's better than the current model, and equal to the Galaxy S20 and Note 20 series devices.

That said, the upgrade in processor could very well drive the device's selling price higher than its current $1,380 price. It's also unclear if Samsung will also increase the clamshell's RAM and storage. If it does, buyers can expect even higher prices as well.

Previous reports also indicated that Samsung isnt' just planning on releasing a Galaxy Z Flip variant with support for 5G. It is also planning on making the 5G version available in a new color: brown.

According to reports, Samsung has created a new brown finish that will be used on its foldable devices. This means the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, as well as future iterations of the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Fold, could also come in the new brown color.
