“Scandal” Season 6, episode 2 will feature a heated confrontation between Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) and Cyrus Beene (Jeff Perry).

In the premiere episode, President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) decided to endorse Cyrus as the next president of the United States instead of his wife, Mellie. The latter was not pleased with the current president’s decision, and she has been trying to avoid Cyrus at all costs. Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) also told Mellie recently that Cyrus was responsible for having Governor Vargas (Francisco Chavira) assassinated, and this only convinced her that she doesn’t want to have anything to do with him.

Unfortunately, the two politicians need to set their differences aside when President Fitz calls both of them to his office in Season 6, episode 2, titled “Hardball.” In the sneak peek released by ABC, President Fitz tells Mellie and Cyrus that they need to show a united front, especially since they used to work together. Mellie doesn’t really want to agree with her estranged husband, but she eventually says yes to the plan. This does not mean, however, that her and Olivia’s quest to find proof that Cyrus killed Governor Vargas is over.

Meanwhile, Young recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly to dish on Mellie and Olivia’s relationship. The two never really liked each other in the previous seasons, but they were forced to team up when the professional fixer agreed to handle her campaign. “You go through life, you for a history together, and it bonds you, even if the history is a difficult one. It was such a ripe opportunity for deep, deep friendship. They are so similar in so many ways, and it was just loving the same man that kept them apart, but… I really hope they’ll be real,” she said.

“Scandal” Season 6, episode 2 will air on ABC on Feb. 2 at 9 p.m. EST.
