Several injuries were reported after a multi-vehicle collision involving more than 50 vehicles took place at the 6th Avenue Freeway, Denver, Colorado, a little before 7 p.m. local time (9 p.m. EST), Thursday. The extent of the injuries was unknown but it was determined that no life-threatening instances occurred.

The Denver Police Department reported that the Westbound Sixth was closed at Kalamath Street and the Eastbound Sixth was closed at Federal Boulevard.

The local reports suggested that the overpass had a thin layer of ice on it which caused the mishap whereas other sources reported that low visibility was also an issue. The highway is closed until further notice.

"Officers are on-scene with a large-scale weather-related, multi-vehicle crash [at] EB 6th Ave & SB I-25. No life threatening injuries have been reported. WB 6th Ave is closed at Kalamath. EB 6th Ave is closed at Federal Blvd," Dever Police Department tweeted.

The reason for the crash was under investigation. Meanwhile, drivers were suggested to avoid the route.

In a similar incident in Colorado, the Highway 6 Overpass was closed after a driver was killed in a car crash on Thursday morning around 8.30 a.m. local time (10.30 a.m. EST). The accident occurred between a full-sized truck and pickup truck and it was complicated by the spilling of dangerous material present on the bigger truck.

The reason behind the accident was under investigation but local reports suggested that black ice in the area was a possible reason. The accident caused the death of the pickup truck driver but the commercial truck driver was unharmed.

"Our crews reported very slick conditions out there this morning, but the cause of the accident and further investigation will be handled by the Colorado State Patrol," Steve Lipsher, Summit Fire & EMS spokesman, said.
