The CW's “Roswell” Season 2 finale ended with the Pod Squad unlocking an alien jail cell, and it seems like a whole lot of trouble was just unleashed. They were greeted by the mysterious Mr. Jones—who just so happens to be Max’s doppelganger. His “Howdy, partner” line was the cliffhanger for the CW drama’s sophomore season.

Showrunner Carina MacKenzie told Entertainment Weekly that star Nathan Dean’s first line as Mr. Jones is very indicative of who he’ll be in “Roswell, New Mexico” Season 3. “I felt like it was the correct mix of amusing and menacing, and Mr. Jones is going to be really fun to write because that's sort of where he lives: between amusing and menacing,” she explained.

The writer also told TVLine that the line gives viewers some hints. For one, it’s clear that he was last around humans in the 1940s, but also, fans should note that it’s some heavy foreshadowing. It sounds like Max and Mr. Jones are teaming up.

“We had fun with that. I think I had Nathan say it 100 different ways on the actual day, because there are so many ways you could do it where it’s either funny or sinister. And it works because, in the end, they are set up to be partners,” MacKenzie noted.

It sounds like Mr. Jones isn’t exactly evil, even if he’s not trustworthy. MacKenzie explained to E! Online that he’ll be part of Max’s journey to learning about his family.

“Obviously, Mr. Jones is related in some way to Max, so we are going to dig into what Max's family history looks like. We're also going to discover in Season 3 that the story that we heard about Nora and Louise may have been the story that they wanted to tell, so our tale about Mr. Jones, even though he seems like a threatening figure right now, is a little more complicated right now.”

She continued, “He's not necessarily the villain, and all three of our aliens are going to have different expectations, different perspectives on whether or not they can trust him.”

Unfortunately, it’ll be a while before fans learn more about the enigmatic Mr. Jones. With production on pause until at least October, “Roswell” Season 3 isn’t expected to return to The CW until 2021.
