But, on Sunday, viewers were clearly unprepared to see star-crossed lovers Young-Ro and Suho bid farewell to each other as the latter died following several gunshot wounds inflicted by pursuing soldiers.

Before Suho died, he managed to give Young Ro a cassette tape. As he lay dying, the soldiers drag a hysterical Young Ro away, leaving Suho to spend his last few moments alive staring at her.

Before the end of Episode 16, there was a time jump to 1988, which saw Young Ro returning to the Rome coffee shop where she first met Suho. She listens to the cassette tape, and cries while remembering the man she loved.

“I remember when I first met you at Rome Coffee Shop. When I saw you putting out your hands to stop the match tower from collapsing...To be honest, I’ve had feelings for you since then,” Suho said in the recording.

The scene flashes back to a tearful Suho recording his voice message and telling Young Ro he would have asked her on a date on the same day he met her.

“I wanted to spend a long time with you...how did I become someone who shouldn’t stay by your side? But I never regret meeting you,” Suho said. “Thank you. I’m leaving, but I will remember you forever. Young Ro, I love you,” he ended his recorded message.

Despite receiving heavy criticisms when it first aired on JTBC and on Disney+, the last episode of “Snowdrop” ended with an average rating of 3.4 percent – the second highest rating of the drama. The show earlier scored its highest rating of 3.9 percent on its second episode.

On Twitter, fans expressed their emotions about the drama’s unhappy ending.

“It wasn't a fairytale ending. It was reality. It hits home way too hard,” a user wrote.

“U know why Snowdrop’s ending was so painful? It’s coz the most important characters weren’t able to rise up against injustices inflicted against them & weren’t able to be happy even in their last moments,” another viewer said.
