The new “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 2 trailer has been released online, along with the release date. The show will introduce Spock (Ethan Peck), who seems more emotional compared to the previous iterations of the character.

According to Variety, the “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 2 release date is Jan. 17 at 8 p.m. EST. One additional episode has also been added to the season, taking the tally from 13 episodes to a total of 14 now.

The plot of “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 2 will pick up right where the finale episode of the first season left off, with the arrival of a new captain to take over the ship. Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) of the U.S.S. Enterprise will be taking command of the Discovery.

The new mission of the ship is to investigate the origins of the mysterious red bursts that appear across the galaxy, Vulture reported. The red bursts have something to do with an entity known as the Red Angel.

At the center of this mysterious phenomenon is Spock, who has been shown a vision of the future by the Red Angel. Apparently, someone or something is out to destroy all life in the universe, and they have to make sure that it does not happen.

The return of Spock is a challenging time for protagonist Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), who is his foster sister. The plot of “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 2 will focus on the relationship between the siblings as they go on this mission to investigate the red bursts.

The new version of Spock that “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 2 will introduce is a little more emotional, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The new trailer shows an argument between Spock and Michael, and towards the end of the sneak peek, the Vulcan can also be seen with a hint of a smile. This is a departure from the previous iterations of the character that have shown him to be fully in control of his emotions.

Peck’s version of Spock is expected to be “emotionally fluid” with people close to him. This aspect of the character, and a possible change in his personality, may be explored throughout “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 2.

One reason that has been sighted for Spock’s emotional state is the life-threatening situation they are in. It remains to be seen how the encounter with the Red Angel will impact the emotionless Vulcan in “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 2.
