ArcelorMittal, the world's largest Steel maker company will suspend operations at Cleveland plant due to declining market for steel.

Luxembourg-based ArcelorMittal employed about 1,440 members of United Steelworkers of America and Local 979 last summer, will leave 950 steel workers unemployed for the meantime, and about 250 workers will remain at the plant, The facility spokesman said Friday, according to the reports.

He expected some job cuts but had not expected it to be so severe, Local 979 President Mark Granakis said, adding that some workers would be eligible for unemployment compensation and supplementary pay from the union.

The company said workers will return to work as soon as it is warranted by market conditions.
