Skywatchers this week were able to view the third and final supermoon of 2016 in all its spectacular glory. The moon, which appeared much larger than average Tuesday and Wednesday, prompted many to snap photos to try and retain the memory of the beauty.

Supermoons are full moons that appear 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than usual because they occur when the moon passes closest to the Earth on its elliptical orbit.

For observers and fans of the moon, the last three months of 2016 have been pretty stellar. Each had their own supermoon to boast of, offering great opportunities around the world to see the phenomenon. The next supermoon won't occur until May 25.

Below are some images of the final supermoon of 2016 accompanied by spacy sayings collected from BrainyQuote.

"By refocusing our space program on Mars for America's future, we can restore the sense of wonder and adventure in space exploration that we knew in the summer of 1969. We won the moon race; now it's time for us to live and work on Mars, first on its moons and then on its surface." - Buzz Aldrin

"You cannot look up at the night sky on the Planet Earth and not wonder what it's like to be up there amongst the stars. And I always look up at the moon and see it as the single most romantic place within the cosmos." - Tom Hanks

Like all Americans we went to bed that night knowing we lived in the greatest country in the history of the world. God bless Neil Armstrong." - Mitt Romney
