  • One of the students in the classroom recorded the teacher’s "performance"

  • He had a pulsing multicolored light show and used deep echo vocal effects

A substitute teacher at an Austin high school only made it through the first period before being ordered to leave the school grounds on Friday. The teacher was expelled for turning the classroom into a makeshift karaoke party and belting out the Britney Spears' smash hit "Toxic."

The teacher’s behavior was much like the song he chose to sing while taking a class at Bowie High School. The teacher brought with him a karaoke machine to a class at Bowie High School. He proceeded to give the students an off-curriculum course on how to sing covers of Spears’ chart-topping hits, according to the New York Post.

The performance included a pulsing multicolored light show and was topped off with deep echo vocal FX.

One of the students in the classroom recorded the teacher’s unusual display of his vocal gifts. The video was later shared on Twitter by a producer at KXAN News.

Following the incident, the teacher was asked to leave the school right after the first period. The father of the student who recorded the video said the incident was undeniably strange and said he appreciated the school for handling the situation appropriately.

“It was all a bit confusing. We didn’t know what this was all about until our son explained what it was,” the father, Andre Abelkis, told the New York Post. “Yes, we were a little upset that a substitute teacher would not care about teaching the class and just do something for themselves. And, yes, I think the teacher should have been removed from class.”

KXAN News reportedly received a tip that claimed the man was a prankster who simply walked into the classroom and posed as a substitute teacher. Austin Independent School District (AISD) said this was inaccurate and noted that the man was a substitute teacher registered to cover a class at the high school.

AISD said the teacher didn’t have a formal AISD badge on him but was allowed to enter the school that day as a visitor. He was checked in through the visitor system, which includes a background check.

“All processes were followed, it was simply a case of a substitute not following our practices,” AISD said.

A representative for AISD also said the teacher was asked to leave because he “wasn’t following [their] best practices.”

An AISD spokesperson also commented on the sub’s performance and said, “I’ve heard worse Britney Spears covers, but the lights are a bit much.”
