A substitute teacher at Lake Shore Elementary School in Pasadena, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, has been removed after she allegedly taped a student to a chair in the classroom.

The incident was reported to the school’s principal, Julie Little-McVearry, by a parent Wednesday night after which the police were notified. Apparently, the teacher, whose name was not revealed, warned the student if he did not return to his seat she would tape him to the chair, which was exactly what she did a while later.

“During regular classroom instruction, the teacher, a long-term substitute, remarked to a student that if he did not return to his seat, she would tape him to his chair. The student found the remark funny, and the teacher proceeded to do as she said she would,” Little-McVearry wrote in a letter to parents Thursday, CBS Baltimore reported.

In the letter, she added the teacher was removed from the post and will be unable to work in any of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools till the matter was properly investigated.

Bob Mosier, Anne Arundel County Public Schools chief communications officer, confirmed the incident took place Wednesday.

“I want you to know very clearly that the conduct that I have described above is never acceptable in a school setting. I was shocked and appalled upon hearing about this incident. Our school is a place where every child is embraced, loved, and nurtured,” the principal added in the letter.

It was not mentioned whether any criminal charges were filed against the teacher. Little-McVearry only stated: “Our school system will make further appropriate decisions at that time.”

The principal also said the school was yet to find a replacement for the accused teacher. No other details about the incident were immediately available.

A similar incident was reported in Prairie Heights Middle School in Colorado in October where a seventh grade student was taped to his chair by a teacher. Apart from wrapping tape tightly around the young boy’s torso and thighs, the teacher also put tape on his mouth, which the student immediately removed. The incident was caught on surveillance video.

Police were called to the school and the teacher was placed on paid administrative leave.

"We were made aware of a situation where a student was potentially mistreated in the classroom," said Evans Police Chief Rick Brandt at the time, local news outlet Greenley Tribune reported. "The school notified one of our officers of the alleged incident and we immediately launched an investigation. The video was alarming and gave us reason to probe the situation further."
