An 18-year-old girl in Nigeria has been taken into custody after she set her boyfriend's home on fire. The man suffered severe burn injuries in the incident.

In the wee hours of Monday, neighbors heard loud screams coming from the home and immediately informed local authorities, who arrived at the scene and rescued the man, identified as Chidimma Omah. He was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. The incident took place in Benue State.

The man's girlfriend, identified as Esther Alex, was detained and while questioning, she confessed to setting the home on fire.

The accused poured petrol around her boyfriend's one-room apartment and set it on fire, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Catherine Anene told local news outlet Leadership. She was taken into custody after she confessed to the crime.

"The incident happened about 2:00 a.m. today (Monday) at ZakiBiam street in Wadata. We will let you know further details," Anene told the outlet.

Neighbors told local media outlets that the couple, who were together for over two years, had some misunderstanding prior to the incident. The teen decided to set the home on fire as "punishment," they said. The reason for the misunderstanding was not clear.

The victim remained in hospital and his condition was not known.

The incident comes months after a Florida man set a woman on fire after discovering that she was in a relationship with his stepfather. The woman, identified as 60-year-old Angelica Blanco, suffered second and third-degree burns in the incident and was admitted to a local hospital in critical condition. She was later flown to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami for further treatment. The man was arrested and charged with attempted murder.
