A homeless man died after he was set ablaze while sleeping on a sidewalk in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Sunday.

According to local reports, an unidentified man attacked the victim, identified as 39-year-old Carlos Roberto Vieira da Silva, while he was sleeping on the sidewalk shortly after midnight. CCTV footage showed the victim sleeping on top of a cardboard box. The suspect then poured flammable liquid on the ground before setting it ablaze. This is followed by a huge explosion during which the suspect can be seen fleeing the scene. Moments later, the victim, who was engulfed in flames, is seen walking away before he finally collapses.

A car passing by stopped and two people got out of it to put out the blaze. Another passerby too joined them. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition. Doctors said the man has suffered burns to 70 percent of his body with third-degree burns to chest, back and face. He succumbed to injuries at the hospital.

A police case was registered and the investigators found a gallon of fuel at the scene of the incident. The investigators were yet to arrest the suspect and were reviewing the CCTV footages to find him.

The incident comes a few months after a man in London died after his tent was set ablaze. Two unidentified men, who were staying in a roadside tent, ran onto the road after their tent was set ablaze. They were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition where one of them succumbed to burn injuries.
