A man has been arrested by the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office for hitting his girlfriend with a liquor bottle before setting her on fire.

According to the arrest warrant, 28-year-old Larry Brown, Jr., of Spartanburg, allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and doused her in gasoline before setting her on fire. The incident happened on Dec. 6, and he turned himself in on Sunday, the New York Post reported.

Two weeks after he committed the crime, Brown was charged with domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature and arson - first degree.

According to Lt. Kevin Bobo, the investigation began Dec. 16 when the brother of the victim contacted the deputies and informed them of the crime.

The victim, however, was able to put out the fire by jumping into a bathtub. Bobo said she managed to drive herself to the hospital.

Due to the severity of her injuries, the woman couldn't explain to the emergency room personnel what exactly happened. She was given emergency treatment before being moved to the Augusta Burn Centre.

The warrant said the woman suffered severe burns and permanent damage to her face, head, and neck in the attack that happened in the master bedroom of the house the couple shared.

Bobo said a Spartanburg County investigator contacted the woman over the phone and a detailed statement was taken from her with the help of Aiken County Sheriff's Office. Her injuries were also photographed.

A search warrant was issued for the crime scene on Dec 17. An investigator collected evidence that is said to have corroborated the woman's statement, Bobo added. The findings were then presented to a magistrate who issued warrants for Brown's arrest.

Brown appeared in front of the magistrate Monday, where the setting of his bond was deferred to a circuit court judge.

Though the victim is out of danger, she will have permanent scars on her body. "She faces a long road to some semblance of recovery," Bobo further said.

In a similar incident, the North Carolina police had arrested a man accused of setting a woman on fire in her car, a few months ago. The victim, Khloe Mc Neal, was found on the sidewalk with severe burns. The 41-year-old man, Venice Taylor, was taken into custody and investigators said the victim did not know the accused before the incident.
