A 3-year-old is dead after accidentally shooting himself. The boy was at his birthday party Saturday in Porter, Texas, when he found a firearm.

“Family and friends had gathered earlier to celebrate the birthday of the three-year-old, and while playing cards, heard a gunshot,” the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department said on Facebook. “The child was located with a gunshot wound to the chest.”

Apparently, a weapon had fallen out of the pocket of a party guest. “During the investigation, it was learned the child found the pistol after it fell out of a family member's pocket,” the statement explained.

Deputies had been dispatched to the unnamed boy’s house for a welfare check at 4:15 p.m. EDT on Saturday in Porter, which is about 25 miles north of Houston. Upon arriving, they found the boy suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The officers took him to the fire station for medical attention. He eventually died there.

No mention was made about if charges will be pressed against the gun owner or the boys' parents/guardians.

The Sheriff's Department sent their thoughts and prayers to the boy's family and friends.
