A Texas youth football coach has been shot to death after an argument broke out between two opposing coaching staff over the score of a match.

Police detained the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Yaqub Salik Talib, for shooting and killing Dragons Elite Academy coach Michael Hickmon during a match in Lancaster on Saturday night.

Yaqub is the brother of retired NFL cornerback Aqib Talib. He turned himself in to the authorities Monday, Associated Press reported.

Witnesses said Yaqub pulled a handgun and shot Hickmon, 43, multiple times after a brawl between two opposing coaching staff over calls made by the officiating crew.

"The altercation became physical leading to the suspect pulling out a firearm," police told NBC News.

Hickmon was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead later.

Yakub fled the scene following the shooting with the firearm. He surrendered to police after a fire-degree murder warrant was issued for him.

A video obtained by CNN showed several coaches and referees involved in a verbal fight before it turned violent.

Yakub's attorney, Clark Birdsall, issued a statement Monday, saying his client was "distraught and devastated" following the shooting.

"Aqib was present when this unfortunate incident occurred and is very distraught and devastated over this terrible loss of life," he told TMZ Sports. "He would like to convey his condolences to the family of the victim and to everyone who witnessed this unfortunate tragedy."

Meanwhile, witnesses claimed Aqib was also present at the scene at the time and that he was the one who started the fight. Heath Mays, a coach who witnessed the incident, said the man in the video wearing a hat and white sneakers is Aqib himself.

"He ran across the field and ran over on our sideline and got in the ref's face," Mays told WFAA-TV. "He threw the first punch, and you see Mike trying to defend himself."

The outlet reported that the Talib brothers have a history of gun violence. In 2015, the duo was investigated after someone opened fire at a Dallas nightclub. Police confirmed the brothers had gotten into a fight at the club but didn't find sufficient evidence to charge them with any crimes back then.

Authorities are investigating to find out what exactly led to Saturday's shooting.
