Tom Gabel the lead singer of the rock band Against Me! has revealed that he is transgender and is planning to become a woman, but will keep his marriage with wife intact, Associated Press reported.

He is the first rock star to come out in the open as a transgender.

Gabel told Rolling Stone magazine in an interview for the June issue that he always wanted to be a woman and felt disconnected with his body, ABC News reported.

Growing up, my experience with transsexualism was nothing but shame, he said.

The 31-year-old singer also revealed that he has a condition called gender dysphoria from a long time and has finally decided on changing his sex to female either by gender reassignment surgery or by altering his body hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatment.

The transgender singer, however, said that he will still be married to his wife, with whom he has a 2-year-old daughter.

Apparently, his artist wife Heather Gabel is his prime supporter in the decision to transform into a woman.

For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news. But she's been super-amazing and understanding, he told the magazine.

Gabel's new name as a woman would be Laura Jane Grace, he disclosed.

I'm going to have embarrassing moments and that won't be fun, he said. But that's part of what talking to you is about - is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind.

Gabel had earlier expressed his desire to be a woman in the song The Ocean from the album New Wave in 2007.

If I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman / My mother once told me she would have named me Laura, he conveyed through the lyrics of the song.

He recently performed his new song called Transgender Dysphoria Blues.
