Tom Hiddleston Reveals Why Loki Couldn’t Be In ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’ Despite Filming A Cameo

Tom Hiddleston revealed why his “Avengers: Age of Ultron” cameo was left on the cutting room floor. Apparently, it was just too confusing.

Hiddleston discussed the deleted scene with Variety. “It was a dream sequence,” the actor explained. “It was part of Thor’s nightmare. And there was a bit where — how does it work? I think somewhere in that film Scarlet Witch shows all the Avengers their sort of worst case scenario.”

Indeed, while Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) is working for Ultron (James Spader), she gives visions to all of the Avengers. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) suddenly sees himself at a party in Asgard with Heimdall (Idris Elba). His friend turns against him. Thor suddenly can’t control his lightning powers. Thor revisits the dream when he goes to Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) for answers. He sees Loki’s scepter, but it seems Loki himself originally fit somewhere into that sequence.

“Thor had a dream and … he meets Loki and Heimdall, so Idris is in the scene too. And it’s sort of terrifying for him,” Hiddleston said. He was only on set for a day and enjoyed the shoot. His scenes made it into one of the early cuts of the “Age of Ultron” as well, but test audiences who viewed that version of the movie made some assumptions after seeing Loki.

“As they were testing the film, the initial audiences were like, ‘Oh, Loki is controlling Ultron!’ and [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige and all the guys at Marvel were like, ‘Um, no, he’s not,’” the actor laughed. “So they just thought it was confusing.”

It seems unlikely that Hiddleston will get cut from his next Marvel film. He is currently filming “Thor: Ragnarok,” which is set to hit theaters Nov. 3, 2017. The actor told the Happy Sad Confused podcast last month that it was easy to get into character again. “Once I’d gone through the transformation that I had to go through — which is not done by me; it’s done by my brilliant collaborators in hair and makeup and costume,” the 35-year-old said. “But after two hours of sitting there and then looking in the mirror and seeing this guy staring back at me, it’s like, ‘Hello darkness, my old friend.’”

The Emmy-nominated actor is giving fans a look at his transformation. He started an Instagram account earlier this month and his first post was a selfie where he was in his Loki wig and costume.
