President Donald Trump has been named the most admired man in 2020, ending former President Barack Obama’s 12-year run, according to the latest Gallup survey.

During the first weeks of December, the analytics and advisory company asked 1,1018 adults across the United States to name which man and woman living anywhere in the world they admire most. In 2019, Trump tied with former President Barack Obama in the male category. However, Trump earned 18% of the overall votes this year, while his predecessor got 15%.

Forty-eight percent of Republican supporters named Trump this year. Among Democratic supporters, 32% said Obama is their top choice, while 13% named President-elect Joe Biden.

The outgoing U.S. president has been among the poll’s 10-most admired men 10 times over the last few years. Before he announced his candidacy for president, Trump made the list in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 2011.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was named by 5% of Democrats and 1% of Republicans.

Rounding out the Gallup survey’s top 10 most-admired men were Pope Francis, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, basketball superstar LeBron James and Tibetan Buddhists spiritual leader Dalai Lama.

Michelle Obama has won the title of the most admired woman in American for the third consecutive year. The former first lady was mentioned by 10% of respondents.
Vice President-elect Kamala Harris ranked second, followed by first lady Melania Trump.

Others on the list include Oprah Winfrey, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, British monarch Queen Elizabeth II, Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett, Hillary Clinton and climate change activist Greta Thunberg.

Michelle Obama has made the list of most admired women 13 times, while Queen Elizabeth II has ranked in the top 10 a total of 52 times.

Several other women were named by 1% of Americans, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and singer Dolly Parton.

The poll has taken place every year since 1946.
