Twitter has faced its fair share of criticism. The platform has become associated with trolling and harassment, which has only intensified given the political landscape over the last few years. To further address that, Twitter is going to give the users more control of their conversations.

Via Gizmodo, Twitter will be introducing an experimental new Hide Tweet feature in order to provide a greater level of conversation control for users. With it, users will be able to hide and unhide replies to their original tweet. The idea, according to a Twitter spokesperson, is to see if it can lead to healthier conversations between people on the platform. However, at this time, there is no idea how wide or limited the experiment is going to be.

Michelle Yasmeen Haq, who serves as a senior product manager at Twitter, spoke on how the Hide Tweet feature works differently from block, mute, or reporting. She wrote in a Twitter chain “With this feature, the person who started a conversation could choose to hide replies to their tweets. The hidden replies would be viewable by others through a menu option.”

According to another Twitter spokesperson, the idea with this experiment is to give users more control over what appears in their feed. While this sounds like a good idea on paper, it remains to be seen how well it will work once out in the wild.
