Linda Evangelista said she was "brutally disfigured" after undergoing a cosmetic procedure and Twitter users have mixed opinions about it.

Evangelista, 56, released a statement on Instagram about why she has never been seen out in public in the last few years. According to her, she "developed Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia or PAH."

The Canadian supermodel said the procedure left her "permanently deformed even after two painful, unsuccessful, corrective surgeries" and "unrecognizable." Twitter users immediately reacted after learning about her condition.

"I have a LOT of feelings about the Linda Evangelista thing: About the pressure we put on women to forever look as they did when they were 20, how we mock and devalue them when they don't, her use of the word 'deformed' to describe herself now," Fashionista editor-in-chief Tyler McCall tweeted.

"I had a HUGE thought about this and wasn't feeling great about piling on a woman in pain. But saying she cannot show her face because she is no longer 'beautiful' made me furious and sad," Elle contributing editor Faran Krentcil commented.

Many also said that she still looked beautiful and only gained weight. One netizen disagreed with her claim that she was "brutally disfigured." The user said she was sorry that Evangelista's self-esteem made her view her current look as "disfigured."

"It’s not just weight gain. The condition coolsculpting gave her causes fat cells to turn into big, hard lumps, almost cyst-like. They’re on her face, neck, etc. I think, if any of us woke up one day like that (esp after making our entire career off beauty), we’d feel 'disfigured,'" Sophie Ross, writer and editor at Refinery, Stylecaster and Byrdie, added.

Another questioned why the model underwent such a procedure when she already looked beautiful. A different user agreed saying she was already beautiful but was still striving for "some sort of perfection." The user felt that she should have embraced the natural aging process. Several also left supportive and uplifting messages for Evangelista. They reminded her that beauty is more than what one sees through the eyes.

"Facial or physical beauty does reside in looks only and cruel time will destroy it. Cultivate a personality that will override the 'Looks culture' and bring out your inner strength. That is the real beauty that all people will love for long. Rise and shine Linda," one wrote.

"Linda was, and still is, the ultimate supermodel. She is still my favorite, and remains the only real 'chameleon' to ever grace the runway. Status not made by a surgeon, or negotiated by rich or famous parents. Just a real top model, now and forever," one fan added.
