  • Madonna's unrecognizable appearance at the 2023 Grammy Awards shocked fans
  • The singer took the stage to introduce Kim Petras and Sam Smith for their "Unholy" appearance
  • Some social media users accused Madonna of going under the knife

Madonna looked unrecognizable at the 2023 Grammys Awards Sunday, according to a number of her fans.

Madonna, 64, took the Grammys stage to introduce Kim Petras and Sam Smith for their "Unholy" appearance. She kept her hair back in braid ponytails with dangling tight braids down the front sides of her face, which looked neutral with her bleached eyebrows.

The "Like A Virgin" singer wore a black blazer dress and a matching maxi skirt over a white collared shirt and black tie. She completed her look with fishnet tights and purple platform heels.

After Madonna appeared on stage, fans and viewers took to Twitter to comment on her face, claiming that she did not look like herself and accusing her of going under the knife, Page Six reported.

"I'm all for cosmetic surgery, but Madonna should have left her face alone after her last lift. Her hair, makeup [and] eyebrows make her only look worse. The mother of reinvention needs an intervention. And yes, I'll be paying [$]1,300 to see her at MSG this summer," actor and performer Damon Gonzalez tweeted.

"Madonna was naturally beautiful for most of her life... so it beggars belief why she needed to go to this extreme. A little filler maybe, but this is tragic," a second person wrote.

"Madonna needs to stop with the plastic surgery and embrace the aging process. She's nearly unrecognizable at this point," another user tweeted.

Madonna received similar comments after posting on Instagram a clip showing off her 2023 Grammys look.

"Holy s--t, she has destroyed her beautiful face. For such a strong woman and role model for us ladies, she leaves me sad," one commented. Another wrote, "Nah girl, that is not a look."

But many fans showed their support for Madonna by leaving heart and fire emojis in the comments section. Some also defended her from the criticism of her appearance.

"The negative comments are ridiculous. She's a legend and an older woman...let her have her fun. But I promise you she doesn't care what y'all think," one fan wrote.

"The winner is you! [You] always will be the GREATEST POP ARTIST," another supporter commented on Madonna's post.

While her face sparked confusion among viewers, Madonna's Grammys look and outfit received approval from many fans.

"Beautiful!" one fan wrote of her look for the night. Another added, "Madonna in a suit is so sexy and empowering!"

It wasn't the first time Madonna had been called out over her changing appearance.

Last year, some social media users claimed that the "Material Girl" songstress looked unrecognizable in a video she uploaded on Instagram.

In the clip, Madonna rocked a pouty lip with a choppy pink hairdo and bleach-blonde eyebrows. Her bone structure appeared more heart-shaped than usual.

Some fans claimed Madonna looked like Marilyn Manson in the clip and found her appearance "freaky" and "scary."

"That isn't Madonna, is it? What happened to her? She looks nothin' like she used to," one fan commented. Another wrote, "She doesn't even look like Madonna anymore. Sad. I thought she'd age gracefully and show women they don't need to change themselves."
