Prince George's photos and videos during the game became viral on Twitter. Many talked about his happy face when Shaw hit the goal and several could relate to the little prince's sad face when the competition ended. Middleton's husband congratulated the winning team on Instagram later that day and praised England for their performance despite the loss. The future king called the experience "heartbreaking" and said he remains hopeful for the team.

"Heartbreaking. Congratulations @Azzurri on a great victory," he wrote on Instagram. "@England, you’ve all come so far, but sadly this time it wasn’t our day. You can all hold your heads high, and be so proud of yourselves — I know there’s more to come. W."

Prince William's post received several responses, and many of them mentioned his son's facial expression.
